Clement-Trained Love Appeals Rallies From Far Back To Win Sunday’s $100,000 Incredible Revenge Stakes

August 11, 2024

In what turned out to be a near carbon copy of her last start, Love Appeals stormed from off the pace and sustained her rally long enough to catch the front-running Shoshanah in the final 100 yards, going on to a one-length victory in Sunday’s $100,000 Incredible Revenge Stakes at Monmouth Park.

Trained by Christophe Clement and ridden by Vincent Cheminaud, Love Appeals rallied from far back in the six-horse field of fillies and mares, 3 and up, and needed to pass three horses in the stretch of the five-furlong grass race to notch the first stakes victory of her 10-race career.

Last month, in a win at five furlongs on the grass at Monmouth Park, Love Appeals used the same tactics to score a 1½-length victory.

“You always worry with her late-running style,” said Clement. “The good news is she is good enough to overcome it, which is great. She deserved this stakes win. It’s great for her. It takes a little pressure away from us to finally get one after a couple of tries with her.”

The 4-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of Speightstown picked up her fourth career win – all on the turf – and had her stakes breakthrough after four previous misses in stakes company.

“She’s had two starts and two wins at Monmouth Park this year so I’m very happy, especially since she belongs to an owner-breeder, Moyglare Stud, who has been a great supporter of my stable for many, many years. I’m delighted for them,” said Clement.

Shoshanah, breaking from the outside post, assumed the lead easily and took the field through early fractions of :21.41 and :45.07. Cheminaud had Love Appeals tracking in fourth then, with Shoshanah wheeling out of the final turn and opening up on the field, appearing to be on her way to a win.

“It was the same thing as the last race she won here the way it played out,” said Cheminaud. “My filly was very strong. I was sitting behind the leaders early so I felt very good. I was a little worried about the grass because it was a little soft but she handled it well. She had good action. That’s why I started her a little earlier this time. She was the best today.”

Love Appeals needed almost the entire stretch to finally get by, flying home on the outside.

“She was going strong and the three horses we had to pass in the stretch all seemed to be getting tired,” said Cheminaud. “She was well on the bit and she really showed how strong a finisher she is.”

Love Appeals paid $3.40 to win as the odds on favorite.

Clement’s other entry, Lady Mia, snagged third, 1¼ lengths behind Shoshanah.
