EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Surya and jockey Paco Lopez split horses early in the stretch and then collared the front-running Miss San Gabriel in the final sixteenth of a mile for a 1¾-length victory in Friday’s featured $42,000 allowance on the opening night of the Monmouth-at-Meadowlands meet.

Trained by Brittany Russell, who won two races on the six-race, all-turf card, Surya ended a 15-race losing streak. The Virginia-bred daughter of Street Sense had last won a race on Aug. 1, 2022.

Miss San Gabriel, who fought off two early challenges in the mile and a sixteenth feature, gave way later after being pushed to early fractions of :2266, :47.46 and 1:10.83 through six furlongs.

The winning time over a turf course labelled firm was 1:40.69.

Active rallied to get second, a nose better than Madame Mischief.

Owned by Morgans Ford Farm, Surya posted her third victory from 21 career starts.

She returned $6.20 to win.
