Lipstick City Proves Best in Boiling Springs
July 15, 2017
Oceanport, N.J. – Lipstick City closed widest around the far turn before drawing clear late in the lane to capture the $75,000 Boiling Springs Stakes at Monmouth Park on Saturday afternoon by 2 ½ lengths.
Trained by Chad Brown, Lipstick City covered the mile and a sixteenth over “good” turf in 1:45.70 and returned $4.60, $2.60 and $2.10 as the favorite in the field of eight 3-year-old fillies. Majestic Bonnie, who took the lead at the top of the straight, settled for second, completing the $21 exacta and returning $4.40 and $2.60. Pacesetter Watch Your Six was another 3 ½ lengths back in third, good for a $4.40 show mutuel.
“I saw Watch Your Six go to the front and set a moderate tempo,” said winning jockey Nik Juarez. “Once we got to the backstretch, she was running comfortably. When I got to the 3/8ths pole, I was looking for a seam and saw Eddie (jockey Castro) make a move and followed him through it. At the top of the lane she changed leads, responded well and finished nicely.”
A daughter of City Zip from the A.P. Indy mare Star Tornina, Lipstick City has a record of 2-1-0 from six starts, good for earnings of $100,669. She races in the colors of Laymon, Robbing Broadbent IV et al.
Live racing continues at Monmouth Park on Sunday, July 16 – gates open 11:30 a.m., first post 12:50 p.m. for Day 2 of the Surf & Turf Seafood Festival.
