Sine Wave finds herself back into graded stakes action for the second time in her career when she breaks from the rail in a field of nine in Saturday’s Grade 3, $100,000 Monmouth Oaks going a mile and a sixteenth.

            The daughter of Big Brown out of the Cuvee mare Curlina made her debut around two turns a winning one last time out when she sat behind the early pace before making her move on the far turn and got up in time to score the victory by a neck against allowance optional claiming company at Penn National on July 12. Albin Jimenez was aboard for her latest win and will get the call once again on Saturday.

            “I wanted to get her around two turns before this race because we’ve had the Oaks on our radar all along,” said trainer Ben Perkins Jr. “She broke a step slow, but settled nicely and then made her move three-wide on the turn and she responded well.”

            Sine Wave placed in her only other start in a graded stakes event when she finished second after being bumped at the start behind Sweet Loretta in the Grade 3 Beaumont Stakes at Keeneland on April 19.

            Sine Wave took the first two races of her career, breaking her maiden at first asking in her only start as a 2-year-old at Laurel Park and then romping in an allowance optional claiming field by 7 ¾ lengths at Parx.

            Owned by Jeremiah Kane, the 3-year-old filly has worked twice leading up to first try on the Monmouth main track. In her latest, she fired a bullet three furlong work in :35, the fastest of the 14 horses that went the distance on Aug. 6.

            “She’s been training really well coming into the race,” said Perkins. “I don’t think the rail will be a problem as long as she breaks sharp and she’ll be able to save some ground.”

            To grab her first graded stakes victory, Sine Wave will have to get by four stakes winners including graded stakes victor Overture, for Bill Mott, who took the Grade 3 Indiana Oaks wire-to-wire in her last outing at Indiana Grand.

            The Monmouth Oaks will run as race 10 on Saturday’s 11-race card. Gates open at 11:30 a.m. with first post scheduled for 12:50 p.m.
