Oceanport, N.J. – Stephen G. and Debbi Jackson’s Clare Skies Ahead closed with a full head of steam, running by Martita Sangrita to capture the $60,000 Omnibus Stakes on Saturday at Monmouth Park by three-quarters of a length.

Ridden by Horacio Karamanos, Clare Skies Ahead sat far off the pace set by Bianco Tartufo and pressed by Martita Sangrita, before making a move around the far turn and flying through the stretch to cover the mile and three-eighths over firm turf in 2:14 flat.  The winner returned $11.80, $5 and $3.20 and topped the $51.80 exacta.  Martita Sangrita, who bested Clare Skies Ahead in their last meeting, paid $6.40 and $3.40 and finished 4 ¼ lengths ahead of Bianco Tartufo, who paid $3 to show.

“She can handle any distance,” said winning conditioner Flint W. Stites.  “The only question with her is getting her to relax and she was able to do that today.  Thankfully the runner-up went up and pressed the pace a little, so that helped.  We were able to catch that horse (Martita Sangria), unlike last time.”

A 5-year-old mare of Sky Classic from the Runaway Groom mare Runaway Clare, Clare Skies Ahead improved her record to 4-4-3 from 17 starts, good for earnings of $158,060.

Live racing continues at Monmouth Park on Sunday, Aug. 26 – gates open 11:30 a.m., first post 12:45 p.m.
