Oceanport, N.J. – Edwin Merryman’s Jazzy Idea closed from last to first in a thrilling stretch drive to wear down the Stopshoppingmaria and prove best by three-quarters of a length in the $60,000 Crank It Up Stakes at Monmouth Park on Saturday.

Toting co-highweight of 123 pounds, Jazzy Idea covered the 5 ½ furlongs in 1:01 2/5 on firm turf and returned $7.20, $3 and $2.40. Even-money favorite Stopshoppingmaria completed the $19.80 exacta and paid $2.40 and $2.40. It was another length-and-three-quarters back to Sensible Lady, who paid $2.60 to show.

“It worked out very good for us that there was so much speed,” said winning rider Elvis Trujillo, who notched his fifth win on the card. “I was planning on waiting to the top of the stretch and come with one run. It worked out perfectly. She flew through the stretch. The second horse (Stopshoppingmaria) was coming off a long layoff, so that certainly helped, too.”

The stakes win was the second for Jazzy Idea and her fifth victory in 11 lifetime starts.  The 3-year-old Maryland bred filly has now earned $191,030 her owner and trainer Edwin Merryman.

“This is wonderful. Wonderful,” said Merryman. “That run she comes with is pretty spectacular. Her last race in The Very One Stakes at Pimlico was a little too short for her. I was hoping the extra sixteenth (of a mile) would do the trick and it did.”

Live racing continues at Monmouth on Sunday, June 10 – gates open at 11:30 a.m. and post time is12:45 p.m.
