Oceanport, N.J. – Due to the impending arrival of Hurricane Irene, Monmouth Park Racetrack has canceled its live race card and simulcasting for Sunday, August 28.  Favorites at Woodbridge OTB will also be closed on Sunday.  Additionally, Monmouth Park will cease simulcast operations on Saturday, Aug. 27, following the last race from Saratoga, estimated at 6:30 p.m.

The racetrack is also making plans for the safety of horses and backstretch personnel that call Monmouth Park their home.

“There is available space in the detention barn should horses need to be moved due to flooding,” said Bob Kulina, vice president and general manager of Monmouth Park.  “In addition, the first floor of the grandstand will serve as shelter for backstretch personnel, should it prove necessary.

“This is entirely precautionary, but we’d rather be prepared and err on the side of caution than put any horse or individual unnecessarily at risk.”

Hurricane Bertha, in 1996, was the last time Monmouth Park canceled live racing due to an impending hurricane.

The $250,000 Grade 2 Hill ‘n’ Dale Molly Pitcher Stakes, which was scheduled for Sunday, will instead be contested on Saturday, Sept. 3 and will be redrawn.  The entire Sunday card will be made up at some date later in the racing season.

The 2011 Monmouth Park meet runs through Sunday, Nov. 6.
