Trainer Chuck Spina will send
Winiliscious into Sunday’s $75,000 Monmouth Beach Stakes, her first race of
2014. Coming off of a five month layoff, Winiliscious will look to improve her
runner-up finish in last year’s Monmouth
Beach. In her last race
Winiliscious finished sixth back in December at Gulfstream Park.
“I would have liked to see her get
a race under her belt before this one,” said Spina, “but she runs good
fresh. She’s been training really well
so that’s all you can ask for. She just had a bad race last race. She ran great
in the three before it but just didn’t perform that day.”
A 5-year-old mare by Lawyer Ron,
out of Wini Jones, Winiliscious worked four furlongs in :48 handily Monday, May
12, at Monmouth Park, working fifth best out of 121.
She’ll round out a field of ten as she breaks out of the 10 post on Sunday.
“She always lays close, but she got
the 10-hole,” said Spina regarding strategy for his entry in Sunday’s feature. “I
like that better than the one-hole but she’s going to have to really hustle to
get position because her game is laying close.”
The field will travel a mile and 70 yards
along the dirt in Oceanport as they look to claim victory in the Monmouth Beach.
Jockey Navin Mangalee gets the
mount on Winiliscious in the Monmouth Beach, which will go as race 11 on a 12-race card
