Lucky Rag Doll will make her fifth career start for trainer Pat McBurney in Saturday’s Grade 3 $100,000 Monmouth Oaks, her first try against stakes company.

Lucky Rag Doll rides a two race win streak into Saturday’s Monmouth Oaks, the Oldest Oaks in North America.  The first of her current streak came on July 5, when sprinting six furlongs in a maiden special weight event winning by 6 ¼ lengths. In her next outing on July 19, she traveled a mile and 70 yards in an optional claiming race, rallying in the stretch after being blocked rounding the far turn and claiming victory by three quarters of a length. She and a field of seven other 3-year-old fillies will travel a mile and a sixteenth on the dirt in the Monmouth Oaks, the farthest distance to date for Lucky Rag Doll.

“Her sprint race (July 5) was a big strong race and a big step forward,” said McBurney. “We thought she might regress last time but (jockey) Joe Bravo all along was saying ‘she’s got to go a mile,’ and if you see her she’s a big, leggy filly and she looks like she would appreciate the distance. Even though she had a troubled trip she reacted off of her big maiden win and ran a nice race.”

A daughter of Silver Train out of Here Comes Chelsie, Lucky Rag Doll will again be ridden by 13-time Monmouth Park leading jockey Joe Bravo, who has been aboard for each of the filly’s four career races. He has ridden her successfully thus far, finishing in the money in every race, and McBurney says that he will trust the veteran jockey again with Saturday’s race strategy.

“She broke and got squeezed leaving the gate last time so you’d hope that she’ll be a little closer to the pace,” McBurney said, “but we’re going to just leave it in Joe’s hands. You would think that if she was a length off sprinters like she was (July 5) that she’ll be able to stay up close here.”

Carrying the colors of BDL Stable, Donnely, and Phantom House, Lucky Rag Doll will break from post position two in the Monmouth Oaks, which goes as race 11 on Saturday’s 12-race card.
