Two-year-old fillies can be flighty, especially when lightly raced and trying stakes company for the first time, but Funfair showed enough in her only start to come in to Sunday’s $60,000 Colleen Stakes as the 3-1 morning line favorite in the field of 11.

Bred in Kentucky by owner Dr. Catherine Willis, the daughter of More Than Ready out of the Distant View mare Fleuron floated over the Belmont Park turf course when she broke her maiden to score by 3 ½ lengths on July 12. That first effort was at six furlongs, so she’ll have no difficulty traveling the five furlong distance of the Colleen.

Moreover, she is conditioned by Christophe Clement, who has a well-earned reputation as an exceptional trainer of grass horses, and she will be ridden by “Jersey” Joe Bravo, known as the master of the Monmouth Park turf course. So far in the current meet, Bravo has won on five of the nine (55%) horses he has ridden for Clement.

Moreover, of the 11 stakes Bravo has won to date here, six have been on the turf and they include the $60,000 Lamplighter Stakes with the Clement-trained Malibu Way.

Jane’s Heir will also attract considerable attention. Trained by Graham Motion for Team Valor International, she has a win on the Colonial Downs turf course and was sixth in a stakes race at the same track after catching yielding ground here last time out.

Jewel of a Cat, Trish’s Wish, I am Discreet, Lavende, Stormy Adventure, A Lover’s Question, Doubled, She’s All Cat and Go Kitten Go will also contest the Colleen.
