OCEANPORT, N.J. – The first annual Bill Handleman Memorial Award, established this year by Monmouth Park to honor outstanding media coverage of the Haskell Invitational, was presented to Tom Luicci of The Star-Ledger for his work on the 2011 running of the $1 million, Grade 1 event.

The award honors the late Bill Handleman, who was lead sportswriter for the Asbury Park Press for nearly three decades and made Monmouth Park his home away from home. Mr. Handleman died in June of 2010 at age 62.

Luicci earned the inaugural Handleman Award for his extensive coverage of the 2011 Haskell Invitational both before and after the 44th running of the race, won by Mike Pegram’s Coil, who gave trainer Bob Baffert his record-tying fifth Haskell win.

Luicci, who has been a leading sportswriter at The Star-Ledger for more than 20 years covers Thoroughbred racing in addition to team sports for New Jersey’s largest newspaper.
