Fawkes Has Millenia Back On The Grass

Posted Thursday, Jul 12, 2012

Friday’s $46,000 featured allowance optional claiming race for fillies and mares will be run at one mile and a sixteenth on the grass and the conditions could not suit Millenia any better. Even better, the firm turf that is expected is her favorite footing.

“She likes the turf, she likes the distance and I expect her to run well,” said trainer David Fawkes. “This is a much easier spot for her.”

In her three most recent races, the five-year-old Florida-bred daughter of Milwaukee Brew competed in stakes company at Tampa Bay Downs and Calder Race Course but could fare no better than third in all three while being beaten by a combined 30 lengths. But she had excuses in her last two races as the $55,000 Sara Success Stakes was taken off the turf and run over a sloppy surface at one mile and the $55,000 Emergency Nurse Stakes was on the dirt at one mile and 70 yards.

“The last two, she was in over her head a little bit,” said Fawkes. “Now, we’re back on the turf.”

Millenia will also have Joe Rocco, Jr. back in the irons. He was aboard on February 25 at Gulfstream Park when he lost by only a head in a $62,500 allowance optional claiming race.

“He rode her well in Florida and I expect him to ride her well again,” said Fawkes.
