Nominations close on Saturday for the Grade 1 $500,000 United Nations Stakes to be run here at one-mile-and-three-eighths on the grass on July 7 and Director of Racing Mike Dempsey will have Eldaafer on his list.

Trainer Diane Alvarado said that she has nominated the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Marathon winner, who finished sixth in the 2011 edition of the race. The United Nations is a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” event for the $3 Million Breeders’ Cup Turf to be run at Santa Anita this fall.

“He worked this morning (four furlongs in :48.40) and he’s fit and more himself now,” she said.

Eldaafer, who also ran in the 2011 Breeders’ Cup Marathon, was second last time out in the Grade 2 Brooklyn Handicap at Belmont Park on June 8 after chasing the lone speed all the way in the mile-and-a-half race on the main track.

“He got tired at the eighth pole and I told the owners (Jim Atwell and Kevin Jacobsen) that he was allowed because it was his first race since March. But he still tried hard until the end and he came out of the race good.”
