Oceanport, N.J. – Gary and Mary West’s Chance Encounter made a three wide move to the lead around the far turn before drawing off late in the lane to capture the $42,000 allowance/optional claiming feature at Monmouth Park on Thursday by three lengths.

Ridden by Paco Lopez, Chance Encounter covered the six furlongs over a fast main track in 1:11 1/5 and returned $5.40, $2.60 and $2.60 as the 8-5 favorite in the field of seven fillies.  Angel Dreams completed the $28 exacta and paid $5.60 and $3.40.  It was another length and a quarter back to pacesetter Red Over Blue, who returned $2.80 to show.

“She had a great trip,” said winning trainer Bret Calhoun.  “We got the trip we thought we’d get other than the horse being to her outside (Greatful Heir).  I think she’s still learning.  She’s got some heart and she’s got some talent.”

Thursday’s win was the second in a row for Chance Encounter, who broke her maiden here on July 21.  The homebred daughter of Mass Media from the Dixie Union mare Metro Girl sports a record of 2-0-2 from five starts.

Live racing continues at Monmouth Park on Friday, Aug. 24 – gates open 11:30 a.m., first post 12:45 p.m.
