Oceanport, N.J. – Pot O’Gold Stable’s Innisfree dueled through the stretch with Steady Gentleman, before posting a head victory over that rival in the $45,000 starter allowance feature at Monmouth Park on Saturday.
Trained by Gregg Sacco and ridden by Chuck C. Lopez, Innisfree returned $14.80, $7 and $3.40. Steady Gentleman completed the $89.80 exacta and paid $5.60 and $3.40. It was nearly two lengths back to Cryin Out Loud, who paid $2.60 as the favorite in the field of nine New Jersey-bred colts and geldings. The winner stepped the mile and a sixteenth over a muddy main track in 1:45 1/5.
Saturday’s win was the second in 12 starts for Innisfree, a colt by Mutakddim from the Tabasco Cat mare Beach Barbicue.
