OCEANPORT, N.J. – G.J. Stable’s Dabnabit made the lead early and held on late to capture the $65,000 Colts Neck Handicap at Monmouth Park on Sunday before a crowd of 11,705.

After being used hard to make the front, Dabnabit held off the 9-5 favorite Gunfighter and the fast-closing Hop Skip and Away to post a half-length win.  Dabnabit went the six furlongs over a main track labeled “good” in 1:10 1/5 and paid $27.40, $10.20 and $5.40.  Gunfighter completed the $89.80 exacta and paid $3.60 and $2.60.  It was another neck back to Hop Skip and Away, who paid $3.60 to show.

“Victor (jockey Santiago) did a great job today,” said winning trainer Luis Carvajal Jr.  “He’s a frontrunner, that’s his style and we’re not going to change it.  He had to work for the lead today and he dug in nicely in the stretch.”

The Colts Neck Handicap, restricted to New Jersey-bred runners, produced an identical result as the John J. Reilly Handicap run at Monmouth on May 28, when Dabnabit won by nearly two lengths over Gunfighter, who was a length and a half better than Hop Skip and Away that day.

Sunday’s win was the second this year and fifth lifetime for Dabnabit, a 6-year-old horse by Intidab from the Roman Reasoning mare Signa.

Live racing continues at Monmouth Park on Friday, August 26 – gates open 11:30 a.m., first post 12:50 p.m.  As always, the racetrack is open seven days a week for simulcasting from across the country and around the globe.
